Sebastian Bach / Beggars Canyon/ The Bog/ Severed Hand
Starland Ballroom, Sayreville NJ

Ladies and gentlemen, secure your chainsaws, hide your razor blades and remove all sharp kitchen utensils because Severed Hand is on the Prowl!! This band of four, young, hungry metal mongers kicked some major ass at the Starland Ballroom as openers for the evening! Combining elements of Old School Iron Maiden, Metallica and Slayer, then layering on a dash of Death styled vocals with Thrash guitars and some blast beats, my heart was awakened to think all is not yet lost for the new generation of bands to spring up from today's youth.
Featuring Paris Bierk ( yes, you all know his Daddy...) behind the drum kit, I was awestruck by the sheer professionalism this band of young men had as they played with a tight and polished demeanor that a well-seasoned and experienced band would have. I was blown away by the vocals which were mostly clean but bared teeth with some growling that accented the originality of the working unit. Dave Keelan and Paul Christian shared duties of providing thrash riffs, progressive changes and head-banging riffs while Mitch Burger pounded bass and snarled occasionally at the crowd. Paris' drumming style is all his own, full of energy and little nuances that he adds in between fills and beats that not only showcase his talent but provide for the personality of the band itself. You can see on his face the determination and skill he emanates as he forms the heartbeat for the pulse of the music. The members, as young as they are, were blazed in the required denim and t-shirt uniform that I so fondly recall from days gone by.
Their shirts were tattooed with bands like Iron Maiden, Slayer and Metallica rather than any of the typical generic nu-metal bands so many youngsters buy into today. Yes, folks there is hope for metal, and its name is Severed Hand!!! Visit their website (one of the most creative I've seen in a bit) for more info and cool t-shirts the band makes themselves at www.severedhand.com .
The night progressed for me with the performances of The Bog Band, and Beggars Canyon. Both bands putting on rather entertaining shows with more of a modern sound. These bands had similar styles with a popular, commercial feel to them, which is not unlike the majority of bands played on major FM Radio today. Fans of both bands reacted well and enjoyed them. Sound quality and performance value for both sets were just about equal with enthusiasm from the players on stage.More info on Beggars Canyon can be found at www.beggarscanyonband.com. Info on the Bog can be found at www.purevolume.com/butterworthbog .
Sebastian and his band finally took stage. He emerged pumped and ready to rock! Aside from having just a few minor audio problems during the first song or two, I was treated to a tighter band and dead-on vocals! It seemed as if Sebastian and his bandmates finally solidified their sound.
The addition of Ralph Santolla ( formerly of Iced Earth) gave this band a harder edge and helped bring a more mature and fine-tuned sound to the unit. It is definitely a step in the right direction and I am pleased with what I saw and heard! Ralph needs to keep his eye on Bas though, as he nearly got whacked a few times while the singer got into his infamous mic-twirling! Cheese, Randy and BamBam were all playing their parts.
They blended better this time out and were having fun that could be detected, adding to the vibe coming off of the stage! There was a well-oiled feel to the Sebastian-Machine this night. Obvious practice and rehearsal brought about a performance that had the crowd screaming lyrics chanting and begging for more.
This was one of the most enthusiastic audiences I've seen here, and Sebastian had them eating out of his hand! Ever the front-man, he twirled, banged his head, had the crowd up and jumping in time to the music and generally was over-the-top in form, vocals and presence! Some new tunes were played and reaction to them was favorable. They were melodic songs that yet had strong, balls-out riffs and hooks. The new CD should be an interesting one by the sound of things, and I await its completion. Bas thanked the audience and seemed pleased with the way the show went as he walked off at the end. Thanks to Mike and to crew members at the Starland for allowing me to enjoy a cool show so close to the stage! It was greatly appreciated! Nice to see Maria in the crowd, as usual, spending time chatting with fans!
