SEBASTIAN BACH ON BROADWAY
Was I there? You bet I was!
It's not every day a no good bum gets on Broadway. And on October 14th, 2000, TWO no good bums were there. Sebastian on stage and Justin in the audience.
After SKID ROW broke up, Sebastian formed the band, THE LAST HARD MEN. Although they did not did release an album, they did record the Alice Cooper song, "School's Out" for the SCREAM soundtrack. After that, Bas put together a new band and went around playing clubs, performing SKID ROW songs and various covers while working on new material. In 1998 the silence was broken with the release of "BRING 'EM BACH ALIVE".
The U.S. version of the album featured five new studio songs including "(I'll Never Turn My Back on) Rock n Roll" and "Counterpunch". The other two thirds of the record were live SKID ROW tracks such as "18 & Life", "Youth Gone Wild" and "Slave to the Grind", as well as THE LAST HARD MEN song, "The Most Powerful Man in the World", which goes beautifully into the huge hit, "I Remember You".
Before the albums release I saw Sebastian Bach at an average size rock club called "Infinity" in Springfield, Massachusettes. There was no doubt that Bach was still a star to his fans, but the fact of the matter is he wasn't a star anymore.
Until he was again...
From June to October of 2000, Sebastian starred in the lead role of the Broadway musical, "JEKYLL & HYDE". On October 14th, the night before his last performance, I witnessed what had to be one of the most inspiring performances of the man's career. All the reviews, all the doubt, all the controversy. What's a rock n roll singer doing on Broadway? Everybody, read these words...
SEBASTIAN BACH IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST ENTERTAINERS.
And I'll tell you why.
He's not afraid to be who he is. When SKID ROW wasn't working out anymore, he moved on. He tried a couple other projects. They didn't work so he kept moving. He went to the street and played the clubs and released his own record.
Standing outside the Plymouth Theatre, I had the pleasure of speaking with his co-stars George Merritt, Andrea Rivette and the lovely Coleen Sexton (Coleen, if you're reading this...You're next. You're amazing!). All of them had nothing but good things to say about Bas. How they've enjoyed working with him and how they were going to miss him. Sadly, I just found out that in January 2001, JEKYLL & HYDE will be closing, so now, not only Sebastian, but the entire cast will be moving on.
Good luck to all of them, and to all of Music and the City's visitors, don't be afraid to be who you are. Don't be afraid to be open minded and try new situations.
Because if Rock n Roll and Broadway can work out...anything can.
