Sebastian Bach
Page Quick Jump:.........................................The onetime frontman for hair-metal hitmakers Skid Row, singer Sebastian Bach was born Sebastian Bierk in the Bahamas on April 3, 1968. A veteran of short-lived, little-known bands including Herrenvolk, Madame X, V05 and Kid Wikkid, he was living in Canada when in 1987 he received a demo tape from an unknown New Jersey band in search of a lead singer; the group was Skid Row, formed a year earlier by ex-Bon Jovi guitarist Dave "Snake" Sabo. Signing to Atlantic, Skid Row issued its self-titled debut album in 1989; an opening slot on Bon Jovi's U.S. tour, combined with heavy MTV airplay of the video "Youth Gone Wild," launched the band to stardom, and the singles "18 and Life" and "I Remember You" both reached the Top Ten. Bach, with his wildman persona and photogenic looks, quickly emerged as the focus of fan and media attention, a situation compounded in late 1989 when, during a concert in Springfield, MA, he was hit in the head by a bottle thrown onstage; the singer proceeded to hurl the bottle back into the crowd, where it hit the face of an innocent girl, before physically assaulting another audience member as well. Sentenced to three years probation, Bach then appeared on MTV wearing an offensive T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan "AIDS Kills Fags Dead," prompting outcries from the gay community. Despite the bad publicity, Skid Row's second album, 1991's Slave to the Grind, debuted at number one, although it quickly fell off the charts; in the wake of 1995's disappointing Subhuman Race, Bach was dismissed from the group, briefly forming a band with ex-Breeder Kelley Deal before going solo in 1997. The album Bring 'Em Bach Alive followed two years later. ~

THE FULL BIOGRAPHY
Skid Row began in New Jersey, home of Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi. In fact, founder member of the Skids, David Michael 'Snake' Sabo went to school with Jon, who kept a watchful eye on him during his formative years. Finally after searching through most of Philadelphia trying to find talented musicians, Snake met up with songwriter and bass player, Rachel Bolan. Snake was then working in a music store and he gave Rachel a demo tape. Rachel wasn't too sure about the musicians, but he enjoyed the music. They began working on material together early in 1987. Rachel discovered New Yorker Scotti Hill (guitar) and Snake found Rob Affuso (drums). The original plan was to work as a four piece, with Rachel as the lead vocalist and they were going to cover songs by their favorites like The Ramones. However, they took on an unknown singer for a short while and played the small club circuit for a year.
They kept on auditioning singers, but the ones they found weren't working with the group, which was called in the beginning This Blows because it sucked! Then they heard about the explosive Sebastian Bach, from Toronto, Canada. Sebastian had originally been jamming with Kevin DuBrown of Quiet Riot at a wedding reception held in honour of photographer, Mark Weiss. Here was the man who could interpret and deliver some of their great songs- like 'Youth Gone Wild.'
Even before the first album was released, a buzz began to sweep the States about the fledgling band's frenzied club performances. Having grown up on glam and punk rock, they infused raw energy with the kind of sexual chemistry not seen since the days of the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the New York Dolls. And yet, they had the metal edge of traditional rock. They loved the IDEA of Lemmy and Motorhead, and the speed of Judas Priest. Combining all these elements resulted in a nuclear nose-chain reaction.
The name was chosen because, as Rachel said, it summed up their role in life as musical bums who were constantly told by teachers and parents that they would amount to nothing unless they knuckled down and studied law and got proper jobs. There had been another Skid Row, featuring Gary Moore in Ireland in the early '70s, but Gary gave his blessing to the new project. The next step was finding a producer and Michael Wagner, who worked with White Lion proved to be ideal. A bit later on, the five piece was signed to Doc McGhee.
The first album, which later on went multi-platinum, was recorded in Wisconsin because it kept the band away from the fleshpots of L.A. It included the top hits, such as 'Youth Gone Wild,' and '18 & Life'. Also, an extremely popular ballad, 'I Remember You,' was found on the debut album. After its release, the Skids went on a world tour with Bon Jovi, which gave the raw, untested band a chance to blaze away in front of vast audiences. It didn't take long for the energetic new rockers to get into trouble with the U.S. police for the amount of bad language and risque gestures they used in their set. Jon mentioned to Sebastian that his front behavior was to be stopped and his roadies decided to teach him a lesson for being too cocky and poured milk all over him just before he went on stage, which resulted in a two-year feud. A big break for Skid Row was their performance at the Peace Festival in Moscow, which also included Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, and the Scorpions. They enjoyed playing to 75,00 Russian fans, but Japan proved to be much more exciting, Later in the year of 1989, the Skids joined Motley Crue and White Lion for a memorable European tour during which they blew away White Lion, much to their own embarrassment, as both bands were mates.
With hit singles pouring off their self-titled debut album, and wild acceptance for their music from Moscow to Milton Keynes, it seemed like everything was going their way.
However, success does not come without backlash and the band became embroiled in a violent scene at a New Years Eve gig at Springfield, Mass. The band was playing at the Civic Centre, when one of the crowd members began shouting abuse and threw a bottle at Sebastian that cut his head. Sebastian, then, angrily threw it back into the crowd, hoping to hit the guy who threw it in the first place, but instead, missed and it went flying at an innocent girl, who ended up with serious facial injuries. He was later arrested, charged and heavily fined. With the threat of a prison sentence hanging over him, he had to carry on as the band continued touring with Aerosmith. Another incident occured when Sebastian wore a T-shirt he publicly sported displaying the message: Aids Kills Fags Dead and ended up receiving harsh criticism.
The band finally came off the road after 17 months and felt burnt out. They had played 300 shows and needed to find a way back to normal living for a while.
The Skids took a step into making a home video for their fans, who were impatently waiting for the next upcoming album. 'Oh Say Can You Scream' was released in 1990 and was filled with hilarious footage from the road and from the stage.
Most of the later half of 1990 was spent recording their eagerly awaited second album. 'Slave to the Grind' was released in June, 1991, which ended up debuting at number one on the Billboard Charts, an unusual accomplishment for a metal band. It was produced by Michael Wagener, once again, and featured much harder material. It was recorded in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
They excitedly began rehearsing for their return to the stage, with a massive tour of American supporting Guns N' Roses, creating one of the most exciting package tours of the decade.
The album featured the songs of Rachel and Snake, but with a greater contribution from Sebastian. It included lots of headbangin' material, such as 'Monkey Business,' and 'The Threat' and three moving ballads, such as 'Quicksand Jesus,' which lyrically talked about faith, with some fine guitar work of Scotti Hill.
The Skids mined gold with the cover EP 'B-Side Ourselves' in '92, which was a fulfillment of their childhood fantasies. On the album, Bas is immortalized singing 'Delivering the Goods,' with Rob Halford and Rachel took the mic for 'Psychotherapy,' a Ramones' classic.
Two new videos were released on the same date in 1993. 'Roadkill' turned out to be similar to the previous home video and 'No Frills' was more traditional with just music videos, such as 'Slave to the Grind,' and 'Wasted Time.'
After surviving much tension within the band, Skid Row returned in 1995 with 'Subhuman Race,' which surprisingly charted in the Top 40, but otherwise did not attract any real attention. The album was produced by Bob Rock and had a different edge than the previous albums. By some, it was considered their heaviest work yet with songs like 'Bonehead,' 'Subhuman Race' and 'Frozen.' It had only one ballad, 'Breakin' Down,' which ended up as the soundtrack for 'The Prophecy.' An album was released with their live tracks from that year titled 'Subhuman Beings on Tour.'
Unfortunately, the band did not manage to survive for long and broke up after their tour was done. Bach went on to form The Last Hard Men with Smashing Pumpkins' drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin, but the group disbanded after recording a cover of Alice Cooper's 'School's Out' for the Scream soundtrack in 1996.
Plans to record new songs for the Skid Row greatest hits album, 1998's 'Forty Seasons', fell through, as Bach went on to form a solo project and portray the title role in the Broadway musical, Jekyll and Hyde. Later, Sebastian announced that he had nothing to do with the album. It featured previously unreleased material and a live track.
In 1998, Sebastian formed Sebastian Bach & Friends and recorded a live album,'Bring 'Em Bach Alive' that same year featuring the old Skid Row hits and some new songs that the band co-wrote together.
The remaining members with Shawn McCabe as the new singer continued making music and became known as Ozone Monday. However, Rob was replaced by Charlie Mills in 1998. The band did some tour dates with KISS and Motley Crue, but when Shawn decided to quit, Ozone Monday was finished.
Snake, Rachel, and Scotti wanted to bring Skid Row back and unanimously agreed to hire Johnny Scab-astian as the lead vocalist. He was officialy hired in January of 2000. A short while later, the band was offered to tour with KISS again and did not let such an oppurtunity to be turned down. Charlie Mills decided to leave the band in the middle of the tour, so there was a demanding need for a replacement. Rachel couldn't think of anyone better than Phil Varone, who worked with him in Prunella Scales (Rachel's side band) and previously was a member of Saigon Kick.
In 2001, another tour took place around the U.S. Shortly after, the Skids recorded a new single titled 'Thick is the Skin,' which was released in April of 2002. The band wasn't satisfied yet and joined the Rock Never Stops Tour with Jackyl, Vince Neil, and Tesla in June. Currently the band is on tour with Poison and Vince Neil in the Harder Louder Faster Tour all over U.S. and some parts of Canada. A new album release is schedualed for August 5th of this year and the guys are in the process of making a DVD, which will be released on August 12th, but you can preorder it now at Amazon.com.
As for the ex members of Skid Row, Sebastian Bach contributed his acting talent to Broadway plays such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and recently in Jesus Christ Superstar, which ended up not working out. He also took part as the host in a VH1 show titled Forever Wild for a short period of time. He currently is in the process of releasing a solo album and a Forever Wild DVD. Rob Affuso is in Soul System Orchestras and says that metal was never his true calling and enjoys what he's a part of at this moment.
Well that would conclude the short summary of the talented Skid Row. In my opinion, I feel that no true fan needs to take sides with who they favor because a true fan needs to support the whole band for what it was back in the day and for what it is at the current time. Clocks cannot be turned and lets just do our best at remembering the good ol' days and looking forward to new releases, shows, and news from all of the ex and current members.
