HammerWorld –Interview
Your first gig w/Bas and your first in Europe will be in Finland on 12th
December. What do you expect?
I really don’t know what to expect! I’ve never been overseas before but I’m really looking forward to the experience. We’re only going to be out there for a few weeks but we’re playing Finland, Hungary, Italy, and Russia. Very busy schedule! Also, I’m going out to Canada in January with Sebastian opening up for Gn’R. Getting to know Baz is really cool, he’s a great guy and I’m happy to be playing with him.
Tell me something about the setlist. There should be some songs from
Angel Down, some old Skids tunes, and what else?
We’re playing about an hour and a half set. There’s quite a few songs off of the first Skid Row record, some from Slave to the Grind, a bunch of tunes from Sebastian’s Angel Down record including a rockin cover of Back in the Saddle again by Aerosmith. Sebastian has also decided that he wants to do a few of my heavier songs I wrote a few years ago live as well. Should be cool! I’m excited to be the guy just playing the guitar parts for the first time on those tunes and let Sebastian sing ‘em.
How did you get in contact with Sebastian Bach?
Sebastian initially found out about me by seeing an ad I did for Eminence Speakers in Guitar Player magazine. Then he got in contact with me online through my myspace page. After that everything just kind of fell into place, we’ve been communicating by phone for the past few months getting everything figured out for the tour.
What did you think first when you’ve heard about his offer?
I was pretty blown away initially, I thought it would be a great, great opportunity for me, and a wonderful new experience. I’m really excited to see what I can bring to the table!
Did you like the old school Skid Row?
Of course, I grew up listening to the first two records and my parents were very into them as well! They were really a great band for their time and Sebastian definitely still keeps that rock and roll spirit going now just as much as he had it back then.
You weren’t even born when their first album hit the streets. Isn’t it
strange for you to psyche up for a tour like this?
Nah, I really love all types of music, it really doesn’t matter how old or new it is at all. As long as it’s good! When I was younger I actually wouldn’t listen to anything but classic rock. I just didn’t give any newer music much of a chance. Now that I’m older I really have a greater appreciation for music as a whole.
Fave Skid Row song to play?
Probably Monkey Business, it just is full of great powerful riffs that groove!
Fave Seb Bach song to play?
I really like the song “Stabbing Daggers”, it has a really cool swingy groove to it and I love the bridge section.
Fave cover tune to play?
One of the first songs I ever learned was Hendrix’s “Little Wing”. I still really love that song. It’s just such a beautiful chord progression with so much room for improvisation.
You started playin’ when you were 7. What inspired you to keep grabbing
the guitar?
Music’s just what I do. It’s really been my main passion ever since I was young. The guitar is just such a great tool for me to be creative with, I love just sitting with it and coming up with something new every day.
The first rock tune you played on guitar?
I started really getting in to rock guitar playing after I got the Ozzy Osbourne Live “Randy Rhodes Tribute” album. I just totally got into all of those songs and learned them! I was probably around 7 or 8 at the time. Shortly after that I got really into playing the SRV stuff and Van Halen 1. That’s pretty much what I grew up playing as far as rock guitar goes.
Your own music is kinda like hard rock with a definite ‘70s flair. Who
were your earliest heroes? What kind of music did you listen to growing up?
When I was younger I was really into Boston, Rush, Yes, Queen, Zeppelin, all of the greats! Guitar-wise I was just blown away by Uli Jon Roth from a pretty early age on.
Your fave 3 albums from 2009?
Dinosaur Jr.- Farm, Third Eye Blind- Ursa Major, The Flaming Lips- Embryonic
You released one Ep and one album very early in your career, and now
you’re working on your third recording. What’s your take on your first
two albums?
The first record was really just a good growing up experience for me. I was 10 years old, there were five songs, and I recorded it in a day! The second record I wrote all of the material, recorded it all in my home studio and released it on my 15th birthday. I’ve moved on a lot from the material on those records but they definitely mark a pretty neat place in time for me musically.
When do you plan to release the third one? What can we expect from the
upcoming stuff?
The new album is very different form the last one. It is a lot more melodic, modern, and overall a little bit more catchy and memorable. I’m very proud of it and I’m super excited for its release. It should be out in early 2010. There are some demo clips for a few of the new songs up on my Myspace, so drop by, check them out, and let me know what you think! http://www...myspace...com/..nicksterlingroc..ks
Your career highlight so far?
Completing my new record and heading out to tour Europe!! It’s all happening now!
In February you rehearsed with Guns N’Roses? How was that? Tell me about
the experience?
I was contacted on a Sunday. I got a song list Monday, started rehearsing that week and drove out to Hollywood on Friday. It went great! The guys were all very cool and supportive. I’ve known Ron Thal (Bumblefoot) for a long time now, and he’s just a really great guy and a wonderful player.
What gear will you use on the upcoming tour?
For Sebastian’s music I will be bringing my CAE OD-100 +, I’m also bringing my two old Marshall 4x12 cabinets (Basketweave and Checkerboard) and a small pedalboard. For guitars I’m bringing my Tom Anderson Drop Top that I’ve had forever! Also, I’m bringing my 72’ LP Custom and a new Gibson 58’ Historic LP that Gibson Guitars supplied for the tour. I also will be using my Axe-Fx Ultra on the Canadian leg opening for Guns N’ Roses. It’s a new direction in rack mount processing that is totally cool!
For the acoustic material, Taylor guitars is supplying a 714 CE. I also have an 814 CE at home, it’s a beautiful guitar!
Your cooperation w/Bach may be prolonged after the tour. What other
plans you have for 2010?
Releasing my new album first and foremost! After that, I’ll be working on some new material I’ve been writing. I really wanna try and get my music out in a quicker manner with my next project, rather than taking forever and being a perfectionist like with the last two records. After that, we’ll just have to wait and see!
Do you know anything about Hungary or/and Budapest?
Honestly, not very much at all! I know where it’s at, I know that it’s gonna be cold, and I know that the foods gonna be not what I expect! But I’m very excited to be there!!
Any special message to the Hungarian fans?
Looking forward to seeing you in Budapest! Bring all your friends!!!
